The SIM card has reigned supreme for almost 30 years, however, like most other technologies of its time, its dominance is coming to an end.
Find out here why we believe eSIM’s are set to take their place and how you can purchase one now.
First of all, what is a SIM?
The SIM card, otherwise known as a Subscriber Identity Module, was created to separate mobile phones from the networks they connected to by moving all the necessary security and identification data onto a chip embedded into a removable piece of plastic.
Each SIM provides a unique user ID which a network can access to allow you to receive/make calls, send SMS messages and connect to internet services. The SIM card also permits you to store contact and other basic information so that you can keep a hold of this when moving between phones.
Like all technology, however, SIM’s are continuing to evolve, and the next phase will be the biggest since its inception, where we will see the eradication of the need for physical SIM’s altogether through eSIM technology.
What is an eSIM?
eSIM simply stands for embedded SIM card. So essentially, there are no physical SIM cards required.
If you’re wondering how this works, it’s basically an embedded chip inside your phone that carries all of the same information as a physical SIM but stops you having to switch them in and out. Many of the top manufactured phones already contain this technology and this will become universal in just a few years.
What are the benefits of eSIM?
At this point you may be asking what this actually means for you. Therefore, outlined below are some of the reasons why the eSIM is creating so much noise:
You can change carriers without having to get a new SIM. This means less time having to speak to various carriers or wait for your new SIM.
With eSIMS, you can have two different plans from two carriers. Here are some examples of this benefit:
1.) You can use one carrier for business and one for personal calls.
2.) You can add a local data plan for when travelling in different countries eliminating the possibility of roaming charges or need to purchase from local SIM suppliers.
3.) You can even have separate voice, text and data plans to get the best service for you.
